Commodore Chuma Bethel Adogu was my older cousin and a friend. He was my guide, my pride, and my example in a number of ways. From our childhood days to his years commanding at sea, he showed us what duty and grace look like. The Navy gained a Commodore. We lost a hero and a friend. He wore the uniform with honor, served the nation with courage, and lived with integrity. He served Nigeria and the Nigerian Navy with distinction. He served his family with love. We miss you. A Commodore in rank, but a gentleman in life. His anchor is set. His mission complete. We salute you. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Rest in peace.

The news of the passing of my dear friend and former classmate, Commodore Chuma Adogu, on the 11th of June 2026 came as a great shock. It is difficult to put into words the sense of loss I feel. Chuma and I shared many important milestones in life. We were classmates in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department at the university of Nigeria and our friendship grew from those formative years. Our bond was even more special because our wives were also classmates, making our families connected through friendships that spanned decades. One thing I will always remember about Chuma was his courage to speak his mind. He was outspoken, principled, and never hesitated to express his views, regardless of who was listening. As young men, I often wondered how someone with such an independent spirit would adapt to the rigid hierarchy of military life, where questioning a superior is rarely encouraged. Yet Chuma proved that it is possible to remain true to one’s convictions while serving with distinction. Rising to the rank of Commodore was a testament not only to his professional competence but also to his strength of character. I will remember him as a man of integrity, conviction, and unwavering honesty. Though he is no longer with us, the memories we shared and the example he set will remain with those of us privileged to have known him. May the Almighty grant Commodore Chuma Adogu eternal rest and comfort his beloved family, friends, and colleagues. Even as they grieve, may they not mourn as those who have no hope, for Chuma lived and died as a believer in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We have the blessed assurance that those who die in Christ will live with Him forever. May his legacy of courage, integrity, and faithful service continue to inspire all who knew him.
